Application: The PinAAcle 500 Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) from PerkinElmer operates on the principle of atomic absorption spectroscopy. A sample is first atomized using a flame when introduced into an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. A beam of light with a specific wavelength, corresponding to the electronic transition of the element of interest, is passed through the vaporized sample. Atoms of that element absorb light at this specific wavelength. The amount of light absorbed is measured and is directly proportional to the concentration of that element in the sample. By comparing the absorbance with standard calibration curves, AAS is used to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the presence and concentration of specific metals and metalloids in a wide variety of samples.
